Week 15 & 16

This is a personal journal started from the 6th of February:

Reading Week:

During reading week, I worked on my old animation; Lipsync exercises one and had the chance to go back and fix some of the body acting part.

I had informative feedback on fixing the animation and spent the entire week working on it. Thus, I became stressed and sleep deprived although there wasn’t any class.

Principles of Animation (13th of February):

For this exercise, we are to choose a vine from the internet and do a lipsync exercise.

I chose one of the videos from a Youtube creator called ‘Its Just Luke’ telling the story of Rebecca shooting her friend who hung out with Caitlyn.

Research/references:

I wanted to mislead the audience by having the character holding a knife so that they’ll think my character will stab the other character. Hence, I made sure to hold a knife in my reference video to see how my hand look.

Meanwhile, I also made some research on character design as I want the final result to be a middle-aged lady/monster having a goose coming out of her mouth to kill other people.

I then started planning out the key moments and how to animate the body acting part. I also added a lot of in-between during the making of the animation.

After finishing adding the lips to the face, I then imported the video into After Effects to add sound effects for greater impact.

Reflection from class:

This exercise is the hardest for me to do just because so many different teachers I showed the video to have different feedback and I kept on going back to fix the animation over and over again endlessly.

It took me three weeks to navigate my way through and I’m pretty much happy with the result of how it looks as of now.

I tried my best to hold the keyframes and to add more in-between, playing with ease in and ease out. I applied most of my knowledge to this animation and I think the hard work paid off.

Stop motion TECHNICAL WORKSHOP (14th of February): Pixelate Animation

I worked in a group of three, taking the role of the actress and the editor. I added sound effects and edit the videos to match what my teammates have in mind.

We wanted to do something more comical but decided to go with Valentine’s theme about skating.

Reflection from class:

There wasn’t enough space for us to film the animation freely but I thoroughly enjoyed doing pixelate animation.

I think the final result came out pretty great although I wish the pace is faster as it seems too smooth for me in terms of storyline wise.

Storyboard Lecture (15th of Feb):

After the lecture about the importance of good storyboarding and compositing, we had the chance to do our storyboard with a given script.

Reflection from class:

I did a lot of storyboarding during my BA and because I usually worked in a team, I got used to treating the storyboard like drawing the key moments animation to prevent confusion.

However, the teacher told me that some of my scenes do not affect anything since nothing is happening. Although I would prefer to see the storyboard the way that I did if I were the animator to have full control and understanding of what exactly I’m meant to do, I understand that it’s not the same for everyone.

I learnt that in term of being a storyboard artist, you really need to focus on the main event of the story.

Life drawing (16th of Feb):

Reflection from class:

I asked the life drawing teacher for advice today on how to draw legs and she told me to think of one side as a curve line rather than blocks coming together from a different directions.

I tried to apply what I learnt from her and could see that the drawings look immensely better than last week.

My goal is to get used to drawing legs this way since I believe it has stronger feelings of fluidity and movement.

Overall reflection week 15&16:

These two weeks were really rough in my opinion because I kept on having obstacles trying to perfect the exercise which caused me to become stressed.

I could see my improvements in animation techniques and drawings but could also see the decline in my mental and physical health.

This week has shown me what it is like to work in the industry and why it is important to plan your daily life properly in order not to experience burnout.
