Personal Project: LALÔRE

Attending art exhibitions for inspiration:

I attended three different art events this term including the Museum of The Moon, Tate Modern and NFS Animation graduation showcase.

One of my favourite artists; Sth Boyden, is also having an exhibition in the States. He has been my inspiration since 2015 so this personal project is hugely influenced by him. Although I can’t attend his exhibition, I always visit his profile on Instagram.

Attending these arts events has made me more open-minded regarding ideas and surrealism.

Making of LALÔRE:

LALÔRE is my ongoing personal project about a group of tiny mythical creatures that would go through your drawers. They will sometimes take things that they think would be fit for their ”hearts” and hence why some small things end to disappear as time goes by.

I aim to make an illustration of LALÔRE when they steal things and their operation at night. I am also writing a bedtime story about them in hope that it will get picked up by some publisher in the future.

Before I began this project, I made a research on the artstyle that I’m currently interested in and weird things people don’t usually want to look at. I am fond of the idea of making things that are not usually seen to be introduced to the audience.

I then started doing character design for LALÔRE, their main storyline is sad to me because I could feel that they’re lost, so I wanted to design a character that resembles loneliness and sadness.

I decided to go with the black and white stripe character as it made me feel nostalgic and curious about the character.

I then wrote a brief on the character to help me remember whenever I come back to work on the story and the arts.

Lalôur (people of drawers):

Lalôur(s) are curious, optimistic and cheerful. They work as a team to find parts to fix their hearts when there is nothing wrong with them (usually gathered at drawers of tools). They’re prone to hero syndrome where they would rather give the good part to others who never ask for it when they need it the most.

Lalôur aren’t bad at all and they’re really pleasant and like telling stories but they are yet to figure out that the best story to tell is about themselves.

LALÔRE_Title page and story

I then began designing the title page and writing the story on my notes to keep track of my idea and creativity.

I plan to illustrate LALÔRE using watercolour which is one of my favourite mediums after the deadline since I will have more time to polish my ideas and how I want the painting to look.
